How does homelessness in LA County compare to the rest of the state and country?

According to the 2023 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report, approximately 650,000 people are currently experiencing homelessness in the United States, a number equal to the population of Boston, Massachusetts.  

  • 28% of all homeless Americans (181,399) live in California (vs. 12% of the total U.S. population living in California).
  • 12% of all homeless Americans live in Los Angeles County (vs. 3% of the total U.S. population living in LA).
  • 42% of all homeless Californians live in Los Angeles County (vs. 25% of the total California population living in LA).
